What will my role (Community Partner) be during this process if there are virtual projects students complete? Should I be assigning virtual projects for students?
Over the next week (March 16th-20th), CPS staff will be working with community partners and faculty members to determine the appropriate approach for each academic public service partnership (service-learning and internships). We understand that this is stressful situation for all parties involved, so we encourage you to think about the types of virtual projects that would be useful, what you can support and what support you would need in order to make this transition successful.
What resources are available to Community Partners to support virtual service-learning activities?
This situation is still very fluid and we are trying to determine how best to support students, faculty and community partners with this transition. CPS will be hosting a number of learning exchanges to explore Zoom functionalities and other online platforms as well as virtual engagement ideas throughout next week (March 16th-20th) and on an as needed basis. Please sign up here. Or, contact Amanda Buberger abuberg@tulane.edu (504) 473-6290 to schedule a time that is convenient for you. We will continuously add resources for planning and supporting virtual community engagement activities to this shared folder. We welcome any materials you may have as well.
Where should I look for up to date information and resources about service-learning and internship?
Continue to check this website for updates.
Will students get full credit for their internship even if they are not able to complete required hours?
Yes, students who are unable to finish their internship hours virtually or in-person will be able to complete alternate assignments in order to receive a credit for their internship. Here is the guidance we are giving students:
For students that will be traveling home OR for students whose Community Partners have suspended programming:
Please instruct your student to communicate with their internship supervisor via phone/email or zoom/skype to discuss plans for the remainder of the semester. This is an opportunity to discuss with their site supervisor if there are any additional remote projects that they can potentially assist with over the next 4 weeks. The remote work is not designed to be a burden to our Community Partners, rather it is an opportunity to assist their programming in an alternate format.
We would like to encourage students to shift their weekly commitment to their contribution project and any additional remote projects for the remainder of the semester. Students must document their remote time on their timesheet. Students should plan to check in with their internship site supervisor on a pre-scheduled weekly basis via phone, email, skype, etc. If your interns have been working with youth in a mentoring capacity, they should discuss with their site supervisor how they can potentially continue to engage virtually as well as provide closure with their mentees (via email, skype or a hand written letter which can be passed along to the mentee by the Community Partner, etc).
For students that are remaining in New Orleans and whose Community Partner programming has not been suspended:
Students are allowed to continue their commitment as previously scheduled. Tulane Shuttles will not be available after March 13th. Students are also encouraged to discuss switching to a remote project-based internship with their current site supervisor if they do not feel comfortable with in-person assignments
