CPS administers the Public Service requirement of the undergraduate core curriculum and manages the Mellon Graduate Program for Engaged Scholarship. The guiding principle of the Center includes the belief that public service, rooted in an academic context while growing into other areas of service, contributes to the development of student civic engagement.
Academic Service Learning is an educational experience based upon a collaborative partnership between the university and the community. Learning by listening and working with our community enables students to apply academic knowledge and critical thinking skills to meet genuine community needs.
The Tulane Center for Public Service Internship Program provides students with a competitive advantage by offering the opportunity to build skills and abilities through intensive community-based work.
CPS promotes international service projects for Tulane students and faculty. Public service programs located outside of the United States provide a unique opportunity for students to explore different cultures and communities while doing public service.
Students can petition for various experiences to fulfill their public service graduation requirement. Public service independent studies and honors thesis are educational experiences based upon a collaborative partnership between the university and the community.
The Mellon Graduate Program in Community-Engaged Scholarship is an initiative of Tulane’s Office of the Provost and School of Liberal Arts. The program was launched in 2017 in conjunction with a 1.5-million-dollar grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, following three years of pilot graduate programs in community engagement at Tulane.
