College students in Louisiana are eligible to vote in Louisiana, even if their permanent address is out-of-state.
You can register to vote using the street address of the building where you live, either on or off campus. Do not use a campus mailbox address to register, but you can use a campus mailbox as your mailing address. If you’re not sure what address to use, contact your school’s civic engagement office or local election office.
Are you already registered to vote in your home state, but you want to change your registration to your college state? Most counties and states do not require you to cancel your voter registration after you move, but doing so helps your local election officials.
March 29th, 2025: Special General/ Municipal Primary Election
What is the election? Louisiana has its Special General Election and its Municipal Primary Election. Included in this are the Municipal Primary Elections, State Constitutional Amendments, and State Senate Districts 14 & 23 Special Election Runoff, if needed.
How can I register? Louisiana does not offer same-day voter registration, so you must register to vote ahead of the election. Out-of-state college students are NOT permanent Louisiana residents, as they are residing in Louisiana solely for educational purposes.
- Non-Louisiana permanent residents: You must register to vote in person or by mail by Wednesday, February 26th. Fill out this form.
- Saturday, March 8th: Deadline to register to vote via the GeauxVote online portal.
When can I vote?
- Early voting is March 15th-22nd from 8:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., except for Sunday, March 16th.
- Election day polls are open between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m.
- Always remember that if you are in line by the close of polls, you have the right to vote.
Do I have to vote in person?
- No, but Louisiana requires an excuse to vote by mail. If you are interested in voting by mail, refer to the Louisiana Secretary of State office’s website for more information. The deadline to request an absentee ballot is March 25th by 4:30 p.m., and your ballot must be received by March 28th at 4:30 p.m.
